OUR MISSION
The Oromo Community of Los Angeles and area is a tax exempt, service giving humanitarian organization within the meaning of section 501 © (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, aimed at building among the Oromo and other communities in the Greater Los Angeles area a sense of solidarity and friendship through various activities of common interest, especially in the areas of education, vocational, social and cultural activities
OUR OBJECTIVE
OUR MAJOR SERVICESEncourage through education and other social activities the appreciation of the Oromo people for their culture, language, and heritage. Encourage self-help among Oromos. Expand social activities of Oromos through education, sports, etc. Help members retain and enjoy their cultural heritage and language. Foster and maintain good relations with other ethnic communities and humanitarian organizations in the greater Los Angeles Area. Teach and promote the Oromo language and culture. Assist Oromo refugees in the greater Los Angeles Area through programs designed to render employment, vocational, immigration and social services. Educate and encourage the Oromos respect not only their own culture but also the diversity of cultures in the U.S.A. Sponsor a business workshop that provides information for Oromos small investors. Works with other humanitarian organizations to accommodate refugees to find housing and other related needs. In addition to the orientations and counseling services, the Community also assists the refugees in the Immigration naturalization programs: i.e. applying for permanent residence status and citizenship processing. Offers regular classes as well as, tutorial services for new arrivals in English language and Oromo Literacy School. Sponsors a community based economic development programs and skill training for its members and other disadvantaged low-income minority groups. The Organization believes that an innovative and practical skill training can enhance employment opportunities for the community members and improve the quality of life. The organization conducts workshops by inviting experts and also through its own in-house professional members. Its major emphasis is to teach self-reliance, productivity and work ethics Health referrals to its refugees based on their own needs in cooperation with health professionals and agencies. Addresses the need for counseling and education regarding HIV disease. In addition seminars and workshops by bringing health professionals that strictly deal with the issue of HIV and AIDS. Training for its members on HIV preventions and disseminates materials in English and Afaan Oromo Organizes cultural activities that enrich the lives of our community and our American friends. Upon request we offers workshops and other cultural shows to universities, churches and other Institution to promote understanding of the rich Oromo culture The following is few among many services rendered as the need arises: counseling, translation of documents, translation in courts, cultural orientation for refugees, and technical assistance
